The Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA) has named our own Katie Otey as one of nine recipients of a scholarship to their annual Publishing University. Although the event will be held online this year, it is still chock full of important news and information from the publishing world. Included in this year’s schedule is a keynote from Barnes and Noble’s CEO James Daunt; Publishers Weekly’s Director of Strategic Development, Seth Dellon; and the newly appointed Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer for the Society of Children’s Book Writer’s and Illustrators (SCBWI), April Powers. There are many other important guests from the publishing industry set to participate in this important event. Picture Book Debut!
The co-founders of Phoenix Media & Books have collaborated on another project, the upcoming picture book EVERY OTHER CHRISTMAS, set to be published by Sky Pony Press, an imprint of Skyhorse Publishing. EVERY OTHER CHRISTMAS is the heartfelt story of a child of divorced parents, alternating celebrating Christmas with his African-American mother's side of the family with his Colombian father's side. Written by Katie Otey and illustrated by Samantha J. Winkler, EVERY OTHER CHRISTMAS is set to publish Fall, 2022.

The end of the month saw Katie Otey participating in the first DVCon (Diversity Conference) presented by the creators of the groundbreaking DVPit Twitter pitch event. DVPit (Diversity Pitch) was created to allow space for historically marginalized authors and illustrators to pitch their work to agents and editors. Entirely online and free of charge, this conference removes many of the barriers these creators faced on the road to publication. For more information about DVPit and their programs, check out their website here. We highly recommend you bookmark their page and support their future endeavors or, if you qualify, participate in them as well. It is a well respected pathway and opportunity to reach industry professionals and present them with your work.
